Why your payout can differ
Grade matters more than weight. Insulated wire pays less than bare bright, attachments and steel in an aluminum load pull the price down, and oily or painted material may be downgraded at inspection.
Clean and sort before you come in — separating copper from brass or pulling steel out of a mixed load usually pays for the extra half hour.
